A music festival at Nottingham Racecourse had be closed down early over a ‘health and safety issue’ with a tent.

Detonate, an underground music event, was halted at around 8pm on Saturday night, three hours early.

Staff and police closed off the main stage and moved out the crowd before many of the headline acts could appear.

The all-day event also runs at the racecourse in summer and attracts thousands of music fans.

Saturday’s show was billed as ‘Detonate Halloween Nottingham’ but closed before some acts including rapper Kano were due to perform.

The organisers tweeted: “It’s with regret, we have to end our Nottingham show early due to a health and safety issue with one of the tents. We’re gutted.”

Nottinghamshire Police said in a statement: “We were on hand to help revellers leave the site safely. There were no arrests at the music event.

“The continued safety of everyone as they left the site was our main priority and additional transportation was in place to help with the large demand.

“The site was clear by around 9pm and we would like to thank everyone for their understanding this evening.”

Several people speculated on social media that someone had been stabbed but police confirmed this was untrue.

The organisers also tweeted: “No-one got stabbed, just nonsense rumours.”

“Everyone was walking in the opposite direction as I walked towards the main stage. People were unsure what was going on but it was obviously a serious problem as all the music had just stopped.

“I spoke to one of the stewards who said that police were closing off the area but didn’t say why. A lot of people around us were either angry or confused as to what had happened and one or two were distressed.

“Then all the music stopped across all stages and it became clear the event was over. Everyone began flooding out the tents towards the exit at around 8.20pm. It didn’t become clear what had happened until much later.”

Detonate also runs similar events at Leeds, Brighton and Sheffield.

When organisers were asked via Twitter why the whole event was closed, instead of just the affected tent, they added: “The rest of the event wasn’t able to handle the impact of that tent being shut, so had to shut the lot.”
