Nottingham-born Hi-De-Hi! star Barry Howard dies

Nottingham-born actor Barry Howard, who made millions laugh on the sitcom Hi-de-Hi!, has died aged 78.

Howard was known for playing the part of Barry Stuart-Hargreaves the show, based on a fictional holiday camp.

His character was often the brunt of jokes in the series, and was the victim of the campers’ raucous activities.

In one episode he had spaghetti stuffed down his trousers, and another he was covered in water whilst dressed as a granny.

Howard was in the show for six years of its eight year run on BBC One from 1980 to 1986.

Allo Allo actress Vicki Michelle tweeted a tribute to Howard, saying: “So many fun memories of touring with him.”

His character was also known a sometimes fractious and unusual relationship with on-screen wife Yvonne, played by, Dianne Holland, who died in 2009.

Born in Nottingham in 1937 he had parts in other programmes, including Terry and June, before landing the role of Barry in Hi-de-Hi!
