Around 10,000 people are taking part in the full and half marathon.

More than 12,000 people are taking part in the Ikano Robin Hood Marathon and Half Marathon today as a new race route is put to the test.

The 2016 version of the race takes in new landmarks across Nottingham in a bid to attract more competitors and spectators.

Full marathon runners braving the 26 miles will cross Trent Bridge as they make their way back to Victoria Embankment and the finish line.

Marathon competitors are also taking in Holme Pierrepont Country Park and both races are travelling through Wollaton Park.

The races start at the Victoria Embankment at 9.30am on Sunday and a number of road closures are in place across town which will affect traffic and bus routes.

Most will be lifted by around 3pm, Wilford Lane eastbound from Compton Acres to Loughborough Road is closed until 4pm.

A race spokesman said: “As well as the necessary road closures for the event there are some roadworks affecting traffic not just in the city but on many roads as you approach Nottingham so please plan your journey in advance and allow extra time for delays or congestion.”

Runners will be entertained by live music and thousands of spectators and people running for charity will raise hundreds of thousands of pounds overall.

NCT buses says services will be affected for most of the day on 14 routes.

The 2016 race has a new route.

The 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 28, 35, 36, 44 and 48 will be diverted. Three services will be suspended for part of the day, the 11, 30 and 34, because there are no suitable diversion routes available to use when the marathon is under way.

An NCT spokesman said: “To try and avoid a repeat of the severe delays experienced last year, NCT are working closely with NET trams and will be running Navy 1, 2, 3, 48 and Orange 35, 36 buses to and from the Meadows Way West tram stop where customers will be able to use their NCT tickets on the tram to complete their journey in to the City Centre. These services will also accept tram tickets.”

Full details of all NCT bus diversions are available at www.nctx.co.uk/marathon and NCT will have staff in the city centre on Sunday, as well as providing live updates on Twitter.
