Wollaton Hall voted second best British historical house

Wollaton Hall has been voted the second best historical house in Britain.

Thousands of readers of Landlove Magazine chose the hall, which attracts 290,000 visitors every year, because of it’s open spaces and architecture.

The hall, which is a Grade I listed building, is set in 500 acres of parkland, and was used as the setting for Wayne Manor in the 2012 Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises.

It was originally built between 1580 and 1588 by Sir Francis Willoughby for his family, and now houses the city’s Natural History Museum collection.

Nottingham City Councillor Dave Trimble, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture said: “We are proud to have ranked so highly in this category with such high quality competition. Wollaton Hall is clearly well known and well loved across the country.”

Voted by readers of Landlove Magazine, the top three results were:

1. National Trust Powis Castle and Garden, Wales
2. Wollaton Hall, Gardens and Deer Park, Nottinghamshire
3. Holkham Hall and Estate, Norfolk
