Basford United Academy make local football history

Basford Utd celebrate after getting through to next round

Basford United’s Academy have made history after beating FC Halifax to reach the first round of the FA Youth Cup.

Basford beat Halifax 4-1 in the third qualifying round to set up a tie with Accrington Stanley’s youth team on the week commencing November 2.

It is the first time that the club has achieved the feat since they were founded in 1900 and chairman Chris Munroe said he could not have been happier.

“I’d like to say a big congratulations to the players and the coaching staff. It was a fantastic evening for everyone connected with the club,” he said.

There were scouts all over the place

Basford’s Academy is partnered with Central College, and dozens of students came down to watch the game and join the party afterwards on Wednesday night.

Munroe added: “There were scouts all over the place, we feel several of our lads have got what it takes to play at a higher level and they can’t have done themselves any harm with last night’s performance.”

It is unusual for academy sides of non-league clubs to make it this far in the competition.

Munroe reserved special thanks for manager Martin Carruthers, who is a former Aston Villa and Stoke City player and is responsible for both the first team and the academy.

Chris said: “I’d like to thank Martin for what he’s done. He’s been a tremendous success.”
