A sporting goods store could be turned into what would be the fifth betting shop in Mansfield town centre.
BoyleSports has applied for permission to convert the Millet store on West Gate, which sells outdoor clothing and equipment.
There is already a Ladbrooks, Paddy Power, William Hill and Betfred all within a two minute walk of Mansfield market place.
Planning documents say Millet plans to leave the site due to low levels of trade, and is currently getting rid of stock.
They add m the landlord has put the premises on the market for several years without any other interest.
The site has undergone numerous changes over the years, including Discount Bedding Store, Look-See clothing store and Dollond & Aitchson opticians.
It currently stands between Greggs and an eco vaping store on West Gate, opposite Marks & Spencer.
BoyleSports claims to have more than 300 shops across the UK and Ireland, including some purchased from William Hill.
The application says that traditional retail is giving way to leisure in town centres.
“The evolving nature of the town centre” means there is the need to “diversify to support the vitality and viability,” it says.
“Betting offices have been shown to support the vitality and viability of centres in numerous appeal decisions as they generate footfall and encourage people to spend longer in the centre, therefore supporting the shopping function of centres.”
The applicant says approving the application would prevent another town centre store becoming long-term vacant.
There are currently 15 empty units in the main shopping centre, just over one in five of all premises.
The application has been submitted to Mansfield District Council for approval, and will be determined at a later date.
