Collin Street in Nottingham will be closed for two nights so two footbridges can be removed to complete the demolition of the Broadmarsh Car Park.

Nottingham City Council says Collin Street will be closed on the nights of Friday 5 and Saturday 6 January.

One bridge will be taken down each night and lowered into the car park demolition area and disassembled on site, to allow for what is left of the car park to be knocked down early in January.

Collin Street and Maid Marian Way southbound at its junction with Friar Lane, heading towards Collin Street, will be closed on Friday 5 and Saturday 6 January from 8pm, reopening at 8am the following day.

The council says affected premises including businesses will be open as usual and diversions will be in place around the area in advance of the works.

The council says it scheduled the work for after the festive period to minimise the impact, and apologised to anyone affected.

The closures could affect people attending the Nottingham Panthers home game against Manchester Storm on Saturday, January 6, as diversions will be in place at the end of the game.

Most of the car park has now been demolished, leaving two sections of the car park and both footbridges.

Councillor Jon Collins, Leader of the council, said: “The works are a critical part of the Broadmarsh Car Park demolition in advance of the wider regeneration of the area. We avoided this happening over the festive period so people coming to do their Christmas shopping or celebrating aren’t inconvenienced, and timed it overnight to minimise the impact.

“We know people have been visiting to watch the old car park be demolished and are keen to see further progress made, especially now that plans for the new Broadmarsh car park and bus station and the new city hub have been proposed and presented to the public. We’re looking forward to progress being made on the area’s transformation in 2018.”

Earlier this month the council released plans to build a new car park and bus station on the site once demolition is complete.

Broadmarsh shopping centre owners Intu have already had another application approved to redevelop the centre as part of a £100 million-plus redevelopment of the south side of the city.

In July Intu said it expects the redeveloped centre to open in 2020.
