The whole of the A52 between Nottingham and Grantham should become a dual carriageway to cut accidents and congestion, it is claimed.
Senior local politicians made the call after the third serious incident involving a lorry in three months.
An HGV overturned on the road near to Saxondale Island on Wednesday night, following similar incidents along the route in August and September.
And transport officials now say they want the route to go the same way as the A453 between the M1 and Clifton, which saw a £169m dual carriageway replace single lanes in June.
Cllr Kevin Greaves, Chairman of the Transport Committee at Nottinghamshire County Council said the authority is supportive of extending the road to cope with heavy congestion.
He said: “We’d absolutely welcome a dual carriageway and any other safety improvements on the A52.
“It’s up to Highways England whether any plans are put forward, but we would back any proposals they were to make.”
The route is notorious for rush-hour queues and accidents involving heavy goods vehicles, and is often closed for hours at a time.
Although the route is a dual carriageway between Gamston and Radcliffe-on-Trent, it remains a single-lane road for most of the way to Grantham.
The traffic and danger will become intolerable
George Davidson, Chairman of Environment at Bingham Town Council, said: “The A52 is in desperate need of upgrading, the traffic in the morning and evening is very bad.
“There are plans to build a thousand more houses in Bingham – so the situation is currently bad, but over the next 15 years the traffic and danger will become intolerable.”
To understand opinions of locals, a community action group called Bingham Community Plan has surveyed 2,000 people.
Dr Peter Allan, leader of the group, said: “The road is pretty unsafe, we have road blockages often because of accidents. It always seemed to me that it should have been a dual carriageway from the beginning.”
Wednesday night’s incident is also the fourth along the same stretch of the A52 since the start of the month.
