A Broxtowe care home has been rated ‘inadequate’ after a health watchdog found residents were not always safe from ‘neglect’ – with one resident being left soaked in urine.
Bramcote Hills Care Home in Bramcote, run by Savace Limited, was inspected by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in July this year after concerns were raised to the organisation.
The home’s rating has dropped from previously ‘Good’ in 2022 to ‘Inadequate’ after inspectors found poor staffing levels, insufficient checks, limited care plans, neglect and risks to residents’ safety.
A report of the inspection, made public today (October 9) describes one resident soaked in urine was being ignored by staff after calling for help. Another was found to have been left with dried faeces on their clothes and bedsheets.
In a statement released following the damning report, the care home, on Sandringham Drive, has apologised to residents and their families.
Greg Rielly, CQC deputy director of operations in the Midlands, said: “The home wasn’t well-led. The management team lacked the knowledge and skills to ensure the service was a safe place for people to live. It was concerning that they weren’t already aware of the concerns we identified, due to their poor oversight.
“There wasn’t enough staff to protect people from harm, which people had raised this previously, but management team hadn’t taken any action to address it, which meant people were at risk of harm.
“We found systems and processes weren’t in place to involve people who had experienced accidents or incidents.
“Inspectors saw one person who had capacity to make their own decisions, were using bed bedrails. However, they told us they weren’t aware they had the freedom to make their own decision not to use them. This meant people were at risk of institutional abuse which is totally unacceptable.
“We have told leaders where we expect to see rapid, widespread improvements and will continue to monitor the home closely to keep people safe during this time. We will return to check on their progress and won’t hesitate to take further action if people aren’t receiving the care they have a right to expect.”
A spokesperson for Bramcote Hills and Savace Ltd said: “We were very disappointed to receive the CQC findings in their latest inspection report back in July.
“Clearly normal practices had not been followed in certain areas and we want to take this opportunity to apologise to residents and their families if we have let them down in any way. This has not been our intention at any time.
“Bramcote Hills has been proud to care for its residents for many years and will make every effort to do so in the future at the level which is expected of it, and the local community deserves.”
The home says it began an internal review immediately following the CQC’s findings.
It adds a new management team has been introduced, the care planning system has been reviewed to ensure person-centred care, staff behaviours have been changed and auditing has been improved.
The care home provides nursing and care to older people and people with dementia, and looked after 49 residents at the time of the inspection.
The home must now update the CQC weekly on staffing numbers and it will require special approval before admitting new residents.
In the full report, the home’s ‘Safe’, ‘Caring’ and ‘Well-led’ ratings were branded ‘Inadequate’, where the ‘Effective’ and ‘Responsive’ ratings were branded ‘Requires Improvement’.
The CQC also issued the home with two warning notices for for failing to meet regulations regarding person-centred care, dignity and respect, need to consent, safe care and treatment, good governance and staffing.
