A public vigil is being planned to remember an 18-year-old Nottingham student who died in hospital last week.

Mariam Moustafa died last week at Nottingham City Hospital. The vigil will be held at the Brian Clough Statue, Old Market Square, at 5.30pm on Monday (March 19).

The event has been organised by Nottingham People’s Assembly and Nottingham Stand Up to Racism, which said the event would send a message that “violence in any form will never be tolerated”.

More than 400 people had indicated on Facebook they are going to the event as of Monday morning.

Ms Moustafa is alleged to have been assaulted by a group of people at a bus stop on Lower Parliament Street in Nottingham on the evening of February 20, before getting on to a bus.

She later went to hospital and was treated in intensive care. She died on Wednesday (March 14).

An investigation by Nottinghamshire Police is ongoing into the assault, and into whether her death is linked to the alleged attack.

A Home Office post mortem examination into the cause of her death was inconclusive. Police say more tests are now being carried out.

Mariam was an Egyptian national and Nottingham College student who had lived in Italy before moving to the UK with her family. She had been living in St Ann’s before her death.

Police have said they are keeping an “open mind” about whether the attack on her was racially motivated, but said last week they had so far seen nothing to suggest this.

Mariam Mostafa, 18, has died in hospital three weeks after allegedly being assaulted at a Nottingham bus stop.

Officers also repeated a warning against people posting comments on social media about the circumstances of the case.

A Nottinghamshire Police spokesman said: “We are aware of a lot of inaccurate reporting in relation to this case. Nottinghamshire Police is committed to thoroughly investigating the circumstances around Mariam’s death and will bring you factual information at the appropriate time.

“We would like to remind people that this is an active investigation and legal proceedings are active. As such we would urge people to be careful when posting any comments, which could be seen as being prejudicial, as these could place you in contempt of court. They could also potentially hamper any future court cases.”

A 17-year-old girl, who was arrested on suspicion of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm after the alleged assault, remains on bail.
