Council hopes to buy Arnold Market market and ‘improve its appearance’

Arnold Market could be brought into public ownership and upgraded by Gedling Borough Council.

The authority will meet to discuss a deal to buy it next month after almost a year of talks.

If approved, the council says its plans include “increasing the use of the market for community events and activities”, as well as “improving its appearance”.

The council also hopes to work with traders to boost the choice of goods and services on offer at the market.

A Facebook campaign called Save Arnold Market has been calling for investment in the site.

It has now emerged discussions between the council and Thurland Estates Ltd over buying the market have been ongoing since early in 2017.

Council Leader John Clarke said: “We have had some very positive discussions with the land owner and we are near to an agreement to purchase the market and bring it into council ownership.

“The owners share our vision to maximise the impact of the market and are as committed as we are to improving it for the benefit of Arnold.

“We will have more details in the coming months but this is great news, another significant step forward and will be welcomed by residents, businesses and existing market traders.

“We look forward to making this a real success for Arnold and for the borough.”

The deal will be discussed by the council on Wednesday, November 15.

Thurland Estates could not be immediately reached for comment.
