Nottingham City Council has started legal proceedings to remove travellers who have set up camp on a park in Bestwood.

The group arrived last week on the playing field between Beckhampton Road and Southglade/Eastglade Road, Bestwood Park, and has already been issued with a notice telling them to leave.

The council posted signs around the field saying the group should move on by 8am on Saturday, but the travellers have ignored them and were still on site on Monday morning.

Some people living nearby told Notts TV they were unhappy with the group taking up a field used by local children.

The council needed to fix a gate to stop entry

Chairman of UKIP Nottingham Francesco Lari, who lives near the site on Chippenham Road, said: “The council needed to fix a gate to stop entry to this field but it has not been done.

“They did not have to break into the field as they entered it unopposed.

“They have to make sure that fields are secured in the future so that this does not keep happening.”

Another nearby resident, who did not wished to be named, said they could see the camp from a back window.

He said: “I’m really intimidated by them; they’re nothing but a nuisance wherever they go.

“The field was secure at one time but the council has failed to maintain the gate and the fencing around it.

“A lot of people did walk their dogs on that field but you don’t see anyone doing that now with the camp there.

“I would like to see the council do something about this.”

A City Council spokesman said: “We’re aware of travellers in the area and legal proceedings are underway that ultimately would allow us to move them on.

“In the meantime we will take action, alongside the police, to deal with any anti-social or criminal behaviour.

“We would advise residents to call Notts Police on 101 to report any incidents of concern.”
