Four young Staffordshire Bull Terriers and their mother were found dumped in a box beside Erewash Canal in Eastwood earlier this week.
The puppies were abandoned in freezing conditions as temperatures fell to minus 6 degrees.
Passers by spotted the box on Tuesday and reported it to Broxtowe Borough Council’s Neighbourhood Wardens.

The puppies were rescued and are now being kept at Babbington Hall Rescue Kennels who board stray animals and help them to be adopted and re-homed.
The puppies have been renamed Wellington, Willow, Maisie and Gracie and their mother has been named Roxy.
Staffordshire Bull Terriers are being over-bred which has resulted in an increase of unwanted dogs in re-homing centres across England according to Broxtowe Borough Council.
Babbington Kennels are urging people to think carefully before getting a pet and be sure they can provide it with a happy and healthy lifestyle.
