Dozens of players of the mobile game Pokemon Go have crowded around the Cornerhouse in Nottingham after one of its rarest monsters was spotted.

A crowd of people staring into their phones began to form at around 12.15pm on Monday after word spread online.

The interactive game uses GPS technology to create an ‘augmented reality’ where players search for Pokemon that pop up in their everyday environments.

The aim is to ‘catch’ as many of the characters as possible – there are around 250 available.

Lugia is one of the rarest, and is seen as a huge coup for players.

One player who ‘caught’ the creature, who would only give his name as Carl, said: “About 50 of us have come up here, it’s a lot of good fun, the game has been re-invigorated.

“It’s a real sense of community and there’s real organisation to it. There are websites and Facebook pages that are directing people to where these big events are happening.”

First released a year ago, the game quickly became global phenomenon and has been downloaded more than 500 million times worldwide.
