Video: Andy Lindley, district manager for Notts Fire and Rescue on preventing woodland fires
A large forest fire near Annesley took several fire crews hours to get under control on Sunday.
The blaze broke out at around 3.15pm a Park Forest off Mansfield Road and covered an area 300 metres square.
Firefighters from Stockhill, Ashfield, Mansfield and Hucknall were called to deal with the fire.
No-one was hurt in the incident, which was brought under control just after 9pm.
But it prompted an appeal from 999 crews, which have to tackle dozens of grass and woodland fires across Notts every summer.
Firefighters say many could be avoided as they are sometimes caused by dropped cigarettes or careless use of barbecues.
“Especially disposable barbecues – they tend to throw them away and think they are extinguished when they can stay hot for a very, very long time,” said Andy Lindley, city district manager for Notts Fire and Rescue Service.
“One of the biggest causes is broken glass – glass bottles, believe it or not, can magnify the sun and start fires.”
