Forecasters say Nottinghamshire will enjoy a scorching heatwave this week – but have also issued a weather warning for rain.

Temperatures are expected to peak on Tuesday at 31C – six degrees higher than Sunday’s warmest high in Notts.

Tomorrow will bring a sunny and sweltering afternoon with some cloud cover returning for the evening. Tuesday’s low will be 22C.

Wednesday will also be very warm with highs of 27C, but both days now come with a yellow weather warning of rain – because of the risk of sudden thunderstorms breaking out.

A Met Office spokesman said: “Very warm, moist air spreading north and northeast across the western side of the UK is expected to produce thunderstorms later on Tuesday, then transfer eastwards during Wednesday.

“Rainfall will be very variable, and the extent of thunderstorms is uncertain, but some places could see around 30 mm in an hour and more than 50 mm in a few hours.”

People in areas liable to flood during heavy rain are being warned to take care and forecasters warned there is likely to be some disruption to road and and rail travel.

Temperatures are expected to fall significantly on Thursday and Friday, with highs of 19C and some occasional showers.

However, the showers won’t help hay fever sufferers in Notts – the pollen count is forecast to be ‘high’ in the county all the way through to Friday.
