American fried chicken chain Popeye’s is planning to open a drive-through restaurant in the new Teal Close housing development in Gedling.

The restaurant is planned in Magenta Way in Teal Close, between Netherfield and Stoke Bardolph, where hundreds of new homes are being built.

It would become only the second UK Popeye’s drive-through restaurant following one opened in Rotherham, South Yorkshire earlier this year.

If the plans are approved by Gedling Borough Council, it would become the latest in the fast-food chain’s drive-through expansion plans.

The American chain Popeye’s Louisiana Chicken was first established in the UK in Stratford in 2021 and it now has around 17 restaurants across the country, with dozens more planned.

Plans, submitted to Gedling Borough Council by A.C. Lloyd Holdings Limited, say: “The proposed development is located within an area identified for a local centre, where retail and main town centre uses are considered acceptable to serve the day to day needs of the circa 800 residential dwellings.

“The proposal will provide a drive-thru facility, walk in takeaway options as well as sit in tables, the restaurant will focus on serving those local residents and employees living and working in the area, including within the wider sustainable urban extension.

“A further key element of the development will be ability to serve pass-by traffic travelling along the A612 Colwick Loop Road.”

The first phase of the Teal Close housing scheme, which involves 199 houses, is nearing completion.

The new on-site primary school and care home have also been built while work on the 353-home second phase is currently under way.

However the layout for some of the scheme’s third phase now needs to be changed after a series of underground culvert pipes were discovered.

The development sits on either side of the A612 Colwick Loop Road between Stoke Bardolph and Netherfield, with the third phase to be built on the western side of the road.

There had been hopes for a pub restaurant on the site, as part of the Teal Park local centre.

However this idea failed to gain traction.

The applicant submitted a request for pre-application advice to Gedling Borough Council in July last year.

In the response the council said it was “disappointing” it was not possible to gain interest for a new pub on the site.

It said the drive-through restaurant is therefore “considered to be acceptable”.

The council said the main issues are considered to be that of “highway safety
and capacity, noise and odours, waste and litter management, and design and appearance.”

According to documents the building would be single storey in height and of a “contemporary design featuring areas of timber cladding, white brick and grey cladding.”

A blue canopy would sit over the drive-through section of the restaurant.

The Popeye’s development will further provide 27 car parking spaces, along with two disabled spaces as well as four kerbside collection spaces.

Two spaces will be allocated for electric vehicles.

Gedling Borough Council’s planning committee will meet to consider the plans.
