Gary Lund backs Paul Hurst for Notts County job

Former Notts County striker Gary Lund says Grimsby boss Paul Hurst would fit the bill to take over at Meadow Lane.

The 51-year-old made a name for himself at Meadow Lane by amassing more than 200 games for the Magpies from 1987-95, and also had a spell at Grimsby Town at the start of his career.

He spoke to Notts TV’s Christian Hewgill on the third episode of Sports Week.

Following the embarrassing 5-0 defeat to Carlisle last week, Mark Cooper left the club to take over at Forest Green.

Paul Hurst is now the bookies’ favourite to take over from him.

Lund believes Hurst could be the right fit for the Magpies, who finished 17th in League Two after a disappointing season.

He said: “I think Paul has done a great job at Grimsby. It’s been a very tricky situation for him in a club that has been in a free-fall for a few years.

“He’s stabilised it in the conference and they’ve been unlucky in the last couple of years not to come back and be promoted.”

“He seems like a very sound and reasonable choice I would think for someone like Notts at the moment,” added Lund.

Other managers on the bookies’ lists for the role are former Crawley gaffer Mark Yates, Paul Cox, who was previously in charge of Mansfield Town, or current Notts player-coach Alan Smith.
