Half million visitor milestone for Southwell Workhouse

The Workhouse at Southwell welcomed it’s half million visitor on Wednesday 13 years after the building was saved from re-development.

The National Trust property is the most complete workhouse in the country.

Marnie Kay, aged 8, her mum Sharon Kay from Mansfield and Grandmother Elizabeth Osborne were visiting the Workhouse during half-term at Marnie’s suggestion.

They enjoyed a special tour by pauper character Sarah Godson, played by volunteer Dinah Wilcox.

‘I just loved it’

Marnie, who attends High Oakham Primary school in Mansfield,  said: “I just loved it all – I found things I hadn’t seen before like the graffiti on the exercise yard walls.”

She said she enjoyed dressing up as a pauper, playing with the Victorian toys especially skipping.

The visit ended with tea and cake with staff and the family was presented with a goody bag including a customised Workhouse mouse with a celebratory gold scarf.
