A metal detectorist who put his rare Roman coin on auction says he’s actually “very happy” it didn’t sell – because it means he’ll now keep hold of it.
Paul Capewell, 59, from Selston, found the coin while metal detecting in a field just five metres from his car, back in 2022 in Cambridgeshire.
The coin went on auction yesterday, Tuesday, October 22nd, at Nooans Mayfair in London and was valued at around £6,000, but Paul had hoped it could be worth up to £10,000.
However the coin did not sell, which Paul said today (Wednesday, October 23) he is actually “very happy” about.
He said: “I’m not bothered that it didn’t sell but everyone is surprised that it didn’t sell for a lot of money.
“Earlier today I spoke to a coin company in America and they were gobsmacked that it didn’t sell for £20,000.”
On the future of his coin, Paul Said: “I’m going to keep hold of it for now, unless someone offers me a stupid figure they can have it if not it’s not going nowhere.”
