IN PICTURES: Notts group’s stunning world record art attempt

A Nottinghamshire art society has made a stunning attempt at a new world record – the biggest collection of individual paintings under one roof.

The Society for All Artists in Newark has gathered 32,283 tiny works and stuck them to display boards to create an almost endless exhibition.

Members came up with the idea as a way for artists to re-use small pieces of leftover card from picture mounts.

They were inundated with entries from around the world, creating a huge gallery of paintings which took each artist around 30 minutes to create.

Thirty litres of glue were needed to stick the works to the display boards, which if laid end- to-end would stretch for nearly 3km or 1.8 miles.

“It’s almost overwhelming” said Richard Hope-Hawkins, the society’s managing director.

“Every time you look in another direction there’s something different. There are paintings from children, from experts, from professionals, from beginners, it is amazing.

“The talent out there is just fantastic.”

The society is in discussions with Guinness over the exact wording of their bid, but say they are confident they will get the accolade.

“We don’t know of any other exhibition of this scale, and certainly not one with original paintings under one roof and done in this way,” added Richard.
