An independent investigation has opened after a 50-year-old Notts man died while in police custody.

Darren Brown, from Mansfield, was arrested in a park on Friday, June 23, and taken into custody at Mansfield Police Station at around 8.15pm.

Officers said he was found unresponsive in his cell during a routine check at around 4.30am the following morning (Saturday June 24).

Medical assistance was provided and an ambulance attended but he was pronounced dead by a paramedic at 5.13am.

Notts Police informed the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) of the death and shortly afterwards the body declared an independent investigation.

IPCC commissioner Derrick Campbell said: “Our sympathies are with Mr Brown’s family and anyone else affected by his death.

“Our inquiries are at an early stage and we will be carrying out a thorough investigation of all the circumstances.”

Investigators went to the scene and the police post incident procedure.

Initial accounts have been provided by police officers and staff and CCTV footage from the custody unit is being gathered.

The Nottinghamshire coroner has been informed and the results of a post-mortem examination are awaited.

An inquest is due to be opened at Nottingham on Monday (July 10).
