A bird of prey injured after being hit by a truck has been returned to the wild after being cared for by a veterinary surgery.

The buzzard was taken to Arnold and Carlton Veterinary Centre, on Westdale Lane, Mapperley, by RSPCA staff after the accident early in December.

Staff discovered the bird’s injuries included a damaged foot, head and wings and bleeding from the mouth, and began nursing it back to health, even feeding it by hand.

Vets posted updates on the centre’s Facebook page showing the buzzard sitting happily on surgery desks and enjoying test flights.

Staff posted on Monday to say the bird had been collected and successfully released back into the wild after recovering.

Buzzards are the UK’s most common bird of prey but are usually seen in woodland and moorland.

Their wingspan varies between 48 inches to 60 inches with a body length of some 20 inches.
