Fire investigators are starting to examine what caused a large fire which destroyed a former leisure centre near Newark on Friday night.

Around 15 fire engines were called to deal with the blaze at the former Grove Leisure Centre on London Road, Balderton.

Crews from across Nottinghamshire were involved, and extra firefighters were also called in from Lincolnshire.

No-one is thought to have been hurt in the fire, which started at around 9pm on Friday (September 15) but it took around two hours to get the flames under control and the building was almost completely destroyed.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service tweeted on Friday night: “We’re likely to be in attendance here for some time at what is a former leisure centre.

“Please bear with us while crews work. A fire investigation is set to commence first thing in the morning.”

People living nearby were asked to keep windows and doors closed at the height of the fire and crews were still on site damping down early on Saturday morning.
