Non-league Basford United’s chairman has ‘the feeling we’ve upset somebody’ as the football club suffered their fourth major injury in three months on Saturday.
Midfielder Ash Grayson broke his ankle during Basford’s 2-0 victory against Kidsgrove Athletic at Greenwich Avenue.
The injury came on the 6th minute when Grayson challenged a Kidsgrove player for a header and twisted his ankle upon landing.
Grayson will be in an ankle cast for four weeks and will join Basford’s three other seriously injured players who are spending an extended spell on the sideline and have all been unable to work.
Striker Rob Duffy first suffered a ruptured achilles tendon on the first day of the season.
This was followed later in the campaign by Jake Sheridan suffering a broken leg and defender Rob Darkin ending up with knee ligament damage.
We’re having one of those seasons
The four players have picked up their injuries in the space of just three months.
Basford United Chairman Chris Munroe said: “We’re having one of those seasons I’m afraid on the injury front.
“I’ve got the feeling that we’ve upset somebody because it’s unprecedented to get this amount of serious injuries.”
With the treatment room the busiest department currently at the club club physio Cameron Nind has called on the assistance of injured striker Duffy who is also a qualified physio.
He added: “I think we are one of the most injury stricken football clubs in Nottinghamshire, but it’s nothing to do with the 3G pitch as three of the injuries have occurred on grass pitches.
“We will just keep battling on and giving opportunities to young players.
“I think one thing the injuries are doing is making us put young lads into the team who are so familiar with the 3G playing surface they are excelling and some of the football we are playing at the moment is really really superb.”
The club ran a “pay what you want” initiative in support of their three injured players at the time – with all three unable to work due to the severity of their injuries.
A club record attendance of 379 packed into Greenwich Avenue for the club’s ‘pay what you want’ game on Monday October 31.
£2,700 was raised on the gate with the club then matching this pound for pound, meaning a total of £5,400 was raised.
A JustGiving page was launched by the club for those who would like to donate online.
