An Aspley man who fired a gun at a car in New Basford has been jailed for 15 years.

Wahid Riaz, 29,of Staindale Drive was arrested by detectives after an incident on Malton Road where shots were fired at a moving car.

Police raided Riaz’s then-home in Derby in September and found an imitation handgun, bullets and a bulletproof vest, as well as a substantial amount of cocaine, which was separated into bags ready for sale.

But the gun used in the shooting has never been recovered.

Riaz was charged and admitted both offences at Nottingham Crown Court.

On thursday he was sentenced to 12 years for possession of a firearm with intent and three years for possession with intent to supply cocaine. The two sentences will run consecutively.

Det Ch Insp Karen Pearson said: “Riaz’s actions endangered not just the people in the car but the general public. It could easily have led to the death of one or more of those travelling in the car or even a passer-by.

“What he did that evening shows he is an extremely dangerous man and Nottinghamshire is a safer place with him in prison and his firearm off the street.

“His sentencing to 15 years in prison is a credit to the officers who worked diligently on this case to ensure Riaz pays a price for his actions.”
