Sherwood Forest Hospitals Trust have announced the death of Chief Executive Paul Robinson after a year-long battle with illness.

Robinson joined Sherwood Forest Hospitals in May 2015 as Director of Finance following more than 30 years working in the NHS, and became permanent Chief Executive in March 2022.

The Trust, which operates King’s Mill, Newark and Mansfield Community Hospitals in Nottinghamshire, said he was a ‘significant force’ behind helping it exit special measures – which the organisation was taken out of in November 2016 – and the ‘enormous progress’ made since then.

Acting Chief Executive David Selwyn said in a statement: “Everyone who knew Paul knew that he embodied everything that was great and good about our NHS and the colleagues he was so proud to work alongside.

“This was truly shocking and unexpected news to receive about a great colleague who was at the heart of everything good that Sherwood was striving to achieve.

“Paul was fiercely passionate about the work of the NHS and had been making firm plans to return to the role he loved over the coming weeks.

“He will be missed by all who knew him and our thoughts remain with his family and friends at this difficult time.”

The trust says it will provide further details, including how they plan to remember Mr Robinson, at a later date.

Watchdog the Care Quality Commission removed the trust from special measures in 2016 following concern over higher than expected death rates. The organisation and its hospitals are now rated as ‘good’ overall.
