Labour party leader Jeremy Corbyn met workers and apprentices at a Nottinghamshire engineering company.

He joined Kirkby-in-Ashfield Labour MP Gloria De Piero on Thursday (November 3) for a tour of Van Elle Total Foundation Solutions.

He also spoke to apprentices and employees about the work they do at the company, which specialises in house building, groundwork and engineering.

Mr Corbyn said: “This company I know is doing really well.

“I’m really pleased to see companies that are doing a lot of training because that is the future for our young people.”

The Labour leader, who pledged to build one million new homes in five years if Labour win the next general election, spoke to workers about introducing stronger employment rights and ending zero hours contracts.

He said: “We’re introducing Workplace2020 which is a discussion with workers about the rights they have at the moment, the rights that could be improved but also the opportunities and training that go with it.

“With the possibility of a general election as late as 2020 we’ll have a clear policy in line of how we’re going to improve workers rights, job protection and job security, and of course ensure everyone gets a living wage.”

Mr Corbyn also responded to the recent High Court ruling preventing Government from triggering Article 50 without parliamentary approval.

He said: “This ruling underlines the need for the Government to bring its negotiating terms to parliament without delay.

“Labour respects the decision of the British people to leave the European Union. But there must be transparency and accountability to parliament on the terms of Brexit.

“Labour will be pressing the case for a Brexit that works for Britain, putting jobs, living standards and the economy first.”
