Man arrested after fire leads to Sneinton flats being evacuated

A man has bene arrested after a fire was started at a block of flats on Aberdeen Street, Sneinton, in the early hours of Tuesday (March 18).

A man has been arrested after people had to be evacuated from a block of flats in Sneinton following a fire.

Officers were called to Aberdeen Street at around 1.15am on Tuesday (18 March) and discovered a man was inside a flat with a knife.

A fire had been lit inside the property and three officers suffered smoke inhalation while attempting to rescue the man.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service attended and had partially put out the blaze when a suspect attempted to run from the scene. A 39-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of arson and criminal damage.

A number of residents were evacuated from their homes during the incident, but no-one was seriously injured.

Chief Inspector Neil Humphris, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “This incident required a large number of emergency services personnel to bring to a safe conclusion.

“It is thanks to their skill and professionalism that no one was seriously hurt.

“Investigations alongside our fire service colleagues are ongoing and anyone with information should get in touch without delay.”
