A man has been charged with murder after another man died following a stabbing in Newark town centre.
The 40-year-old victim was found unresponsive in Castle Gate, Newark, at 11.53pm on Wednesday (April 30).
Notts Police have since named him as James Cook, and revealed he was found with stab wounds. Despite the best efforts of emergency services, Mr Cook was pronounced dead at the scene.
Twenty-two-year-old Brandon Byrne was arrested a few hours later and has since been charged with Mr Cook’s murder.
Byrne, of Winston Court, Newark, appeared at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Friday (May 2) and is due to appear at Crown Court at a later date.
Detective Inspector Craig Hall, who is leading the investigation, said: “We have been trying to determine the full circumstances around this tragic incident since it happened but can now confirm we’ve charged a suspect.
“As we make this announcement, our thoughts remain with Mr Cook’s family and friends, who are still trying to process this devastating news.
“They are currently being supported by specially trained officers and have requested privacy at this difficult time.
“As our investigation continues, I would like to thank the investigation team, which includes specialists from across to force.
“They have worked around the clock on this investigation to build up a clearer picture of what happened.”
A large police cordon and road closures remained in place into Thursday afternoon, before the area was re-opened again.
