A man who threatened to kill his former partner and beat her with a TV remote has been jailed for three years.

Tyler Cooke, 23, of Lindfield Road, Broxtowe, abused the woman in an ordeal lasting several hours, in which he threatened her with a knife, beat her, put his hands around her neck and pinned her to the ground.

The victim sent a text to the police for help before officers attended an address at Blidworth Close, Strelley, at about 10am on August 4.

Cooke was led outside and his victim was supported by officers to give a full account on what had happened.

She said that the previous day, at around 1.30pm, Cooke had threatened her with a knife and warned he would harm her if she tried to leave, before pinning her to the floor.

He then beat her with a TV remote control the following morning, shortly before the police arrived.

Cooke initially denied assaulting the victim but eventually pleaded guilty to making threats to kill, assault by beating and intentional strangulation.

He also admitted to the possession of cannabis.

Appearing at Nottingham Crown Court on Monday, November 25, he received a three-year prison sentence.

Det Sgt Chloe Palmer, of Notts Police, said: “Cooke subjected this young woman to a sustained and frightening ordeal that put her in fear of her life.

“Like many victims of male violence, she was initially reluctant to say what had happened to her when police arrived at the scene.

“It was very clear, however, that something was very wrong inside this address and the officers involved did an excellent job of finding out what had been happening.

“Thanks to their calm and professional approach, a distressed victim was supported to give a very detailed evidential account which brought a violent and abusive relationship to an end. This results also highlights the consequences of committing these kinds of violent domestic offences.”
