A man has been jailed for eight years for robbery, including stabbing a member of staff in the face with a screwdriver.

Roy Davis, 58, formerly of Weetman Gardens has been sent to prison today (Tuesday August 22) after pleding guilty to robbery at The Booze Stop on Ilkeston Road, Radford.

Davis will serve eight years following the incident on December 17 2016.

DC Steve Fenyn, investigating, said: “In this case an individual, representing a business, was personally attacked.

“No one, no matter their line of work, deserves to be assaulted while earning a living.

“My advice would always be never to engage in an altercation such as this.

“I commend the bravery of the shop staff in this case.

“They did intervene and in doing so have assisted in taking a violent man off the street.

“I think this case sends a firm message.

“This case involved witness reports, CCTV and DNA evidence coming together.

“Shop security, policing tactics and community spirit is stronger than ever and if you are intent on committing these types of offences, prepare to get caught.”

At around 8.30pm on December 17 2016, Davis entered The Booze Stop and headed straight behind counter.

Davis threatened a member of staff, who was alone, and demanded money from the till.

The member of staff refused to open the till and, as part of the assault, Davis stabbed him in the face with a screwdriver.

The victim continued to resist and, during the struggle, Davis lost a sandal and the hood that was concealing his face was removed.

Another member of staff arrived during the indecent and Davis attempted to flee.

Despite the efforts of the second worker, Davis escaped, having dropped the screwdriver at the scene, and left in the back of a black 4×4 car.

A member of staff was left with a serious injury to his face, luckily just above his left eye, and despite the vicious attack, continued trying to restrain Davis.

The sandal left at the scene was tested for DNA and a profile matching that of Davis was found.
