Police are warning people to be vigilant after a man stole money from two elderly women using a distraction trick.

Officers think the same person is responsible for stealing money in two incidents where a man asked people for change.

The first happened on Monday, February 27, at about 9.45am, when the suspect knocked on the door of an 85-year-old woman’s home in Regina Crescent, Ravenshead.

He asked her to change a two pound coin for two pound coins and entered her house uninvited, before grabbing her purse and trying to steal notes from it.

The second burglary occurred on the same day at noon, when the suspect approached an elderly woman and also asked her to change money for him.

She then invited him into her home in Hanson Crescent, Hucknall, because she didn’t have the change in her purse.

The victim then took him upstairs to change the money before dropping some on the floor, and the suspect helped her pick it up, but took it himself and left.

She later found she was missing £500 from her home.

The suspect is described as being in his mid 30s, and spoke poor English with an Eastern European accent.

He has black hair with a funny curl on his forehead, olive-toned skin and dark brown eyes.

He was smartly dressed and wearing a long dark black coat which came past his knees and was possibly made from wool.

The police are urging anyone with information about the burglaries or who has been a victim of a similar crime to call 101, quoting incident numbers 323 (Ravenshead) and 327 (Hucknall) of Monday 27 February 2017.
