A new free festival featuring Notts artists is launching this weekend.

New Currents Festival is taking place on Sunday (May 5) from 1pm-10pm at The Big Shed at Trent Navigation Inn for over 18s.

This event will be raising money for Emmanuel House, a charity supporting homelessness in Nottingham.

It has been organised by staff and students at the city’s Confetti Institute of Creative Technologies which is based on Convent Street.

Sam Bennett, co-organiser of the New Currents Festival and lecturer at Confetti, said: “We hope the festival is welcoming to the local community which is why the event is free and there is a non-compulsory donation.

“We wanted to bring something that was quite accessible to anybody, regardless of financial status.”

“We’ve got a jam packed line-up for the perfect bank holiday festival.”

Many artists from the East Midlands will be performing at the festival including musicians LYVIA and Midnight Rodeo.

One of the main headline acts is Cappo who is a hip-hop artist who has been in the Nottingham music scene for over 20 years.

Cappo said: “As a local artist, to be able to perform and articulate my artistry at Nottingham-based festival level is so important.

“Having the feeling of being part of a movement that supports my hometown music scene and community is something that I cherish and want to take forward.”

Cappo has recently released his new album, Canon.

A wide range of food and drink will be served at the event by the bars and the venue is ready for any weather.

Sam added: “The festival is very much a celebration of Nottingham – being in the city and it’s being worked on by Nottingham institutions, venues and artists.

“We hope that the festival is the first of many.”
