A full train service is running from Nottingham Station three days after a serious fire damaged part of the building.

East Midlands Trains partly re-opened the station on Saturday and re-opened all platforms on Sunday.

It later announced a full service is expected to run today (Monday).

It comes after Friday morning’s fire tore through the toilets on the main concourse, in a blaze police are treating as arson.

The lifts on platforms 1, 3, 5 and 6 are now in service, temporary station toilet facilities have been arranged and the station car park is open.

Three of the four entrances into the station – Carrington Street, Queen’s Road, and Station Street – are also open, along with both footbridges.

Information screens are now back up and running following IT problems over the weekend which have since been fixed.

However, the ticket office remains closed due to extensive fire damage, so people are being advised to book online in advance.

Pre-booked tickets can be collected from any East Midlands Trains or other train operator stations or for anyone unable to do this, booking reference numbers will be accepted by East Midlands Trains staff onboard.

Jake Kelly, Managing Director of East Midlands Trains, said: “We are pleased to have been able to resume our full train service so quickly. This is tribute to the huge amount of work carried out by East Midlands Trains staff as well as colleagues in Network Rail.

“We are continuing to have a great amount of support from the emergency services and our contractors and I know that people have been pleasantly surprised by how quickly we have managed to get the station back up and running.

“I personally have been heartened by the kind words of support from the local communities, our stakeholders and our customers. I remain incredibly proud of the team effort everybody in the city and the wider region has displayed over the past three days.

“We are continuing to work with Network Rail to determine the precise level and detail of repair work needed at the station and we will keep customers updated as soon as we have further information.”

Passengers are still being asked to double-check before travelling via the East Midlands Trains website.

The company and emergency services have been praised by Nottingham City Council and local MPs.

Councillor Sally Longford, the council’s portfolio holder for local transport, said: “East Midlands Trains and Network Rail have done a fantastic job and I’m sure everyone in the city would want to thank their staff for the huge efforts they have made over the last couple of days.

“It was a major fire but its impact could have been much worse but for the efforts of the fire service, police and community protection as well as the Council’s traffic management team in keeping Nottingham moving.”
