Nottingham-based manufacturing firm BCM has announced it is cutting 400 jobs.

The first roles to go will be 78 production roles over the next six months, which will be cut by international manufacturing company Fareva, who bought BCM in November 2017.

It comes as part of plans outlined by the company for the next two years, which bosses say are needed to make the business profitable.

BCM is on the Boots site on Thane Road in Beeston. Boots’ parent company Walgreens Boots Alliance sold BCM to Fareva last July.

Broxtowe MP Anna Soubry reacted on Twitter, saying: “This is very disappointing.

“I have met BCM – they will work with unions on full redundancy packages.

“700 jobs secured and further investment will be made in the grade I listed factory.

“I have spoken with Broxtowe Borough Council on how we can assist with modernisation to keep manufacturing on the Boots site.

“And to be clear today’s announcement has nothing to do with Brexit.”

Fareva says it will inject £16 million into the Nottingham site for factory upgrades and renovations but will now focus on healthcare, skincare, suncare and oral products.

The production of toiletries, haircare, perfumes, foods and biocides will be moved out of the factory.

Fareva says there are other parts of the group ‘that can produce these products more efficiently and cost effectively’.

BCM has stood on the Boots site for the past 85 years.

BCM managing director Richard Whall said: “Today’s announcement on the plan to invest significantly in upgrading BCM facilities is an absolute testament to the faith that our new owners have in us and our prospects as a business.

“We have agreed a two-year plan with our owners and as part of that we, unfortunately, had to make some tough decisions to safeguard the long-term future of BCM here in Nottingham and take the business back to profitability.

“This means we will have to make redundancies.

“This new strategy is all about focussing on what we excel at, so we can really compete and grow our business.”

BCM’s sister site, Fillcare, in South Wales, will see investment of more than £2 million as it takes on the volume of the toiletries production being moved out of BCM which is expected to create 200 new jobs.
