Nottingham D-Day veteran raises flag to kick start Armed Forces celebrations

A Navy veteran from Wollaton who crewed one of the largest landing crafts on the Normandy Coast, raised a flag to kick off the Armed Forces celebrations.

It’s more than 70 years since the D-Day landings, the biggest sea invasion in history.

Cadets gathered to pass on a flag to a D-Day veteran from Nottinghamshire to remember their sacrifices. 90-year-old, Ralph McClure helped to raise the flag at County Hall to mark the start of the annual Armed Forces event.

Current servicemen and women gathered to give thanks to those who served in the First and Second World Wars.

The Sheriff of Nottingham, Councillor Jackie Morris was amongst those who spoke at the event.

It is a great privilege for me to be here today to recognise the efforts that have been put in throughout two world wars and conflicts before and after.

D-Day hero Ralph McClure, 90, remembers the assaults on Sword Beach in Normandy as if it was yesterday.

Ralph McClure was handed the flag by current cadets and hopes that more young people will get involved with the cadets as he believes it would be good for them and for the Country.

The flag that he was passed will fly until Armed Forces Day this Saturday.

Wollaton Hall is holding an Armed Forces Weekend in remembrance of our Armed Forces past and present, which takes place from the 27th to the 29th June.
