Nottingham school branded ‘inadequate’ after damning Ofsted report

A school in Nottingham has been put into ‘special measures’ after pupils have been found to be frequently kicking, punching and spitting at members of staff.

The Denewood Learning Centre in Radford has been branded as ‘inadequate’ by a damning Ofsted report, which states the school is failing in all areas.

A surprise inspection conducted by the authority last month discovered that restrainment and confinement for pupils at the school was ‘far from being a strategy of last resort’.

The report also claims that only half of the registered pupils were present during the inspection and that the rate of fixed-term exclusion at the centre was high.

Denewood Learning Centre is currently in the hands of the Deputy Headteacher who has taken the reigns in the interim.

Speaking to Notts TV News, Councillor Sam Webster, Nottingham City Council’s executive assistant for schools, said that the authority want to take control of the centre.

At present the school deals with 64 pupils, aged between 7 and 14, who have been excluded from schools elsewhere in Nottingham.

A spokesperson for the National Union of Teachers said that the union is concerned about the situation at the Denewood Learning Centre and hopes it will be resolved soon.
