Nottingham-trained Chanel Cresswell has won the award for Best Supporting Actress at the BAFTA Television Awards.

Cresswell, 26, won the accolade for her performance as Kelly in the hit series This is England ’90 from Nottingham director Shane Meadows.

Sunday night’s ceremony, held at Festival Hall on London’s Southbank, was hosted by Graham Norton and broadcast on BBC One.

Cresswell was trained at Nottingham’s Television Workshop, which also helped launch the career of Vicky McClure, previously also a BAFTA winner for her part as Lol in the same series.

It was the second award of the night for This is England ’90, after the show earlier won the title of Best Mini-Series.

Cresswell saw off competition from Doctor Who’s Michelle Gomez, River’s Lesley Manville and The Enfield Haunting’s Eleanor Worthington-Cox.

On her role in the series Cresswell told Channel 4 last year: “It’s definitely put me on the map. In terms of who I’ve worked with, and the confidence it’s given me to trust my own instincts in a scene and using improvisational skills, it’s been amazing.

“I’ve worked with such talented people on This Is England, I’ve watched them and learned from them. It’s priceless.”
