Nottingham Trent University has been accredited Purple Flag status

Nottingham Trent is the first university in the UK to be accredited for its night-time culture and promoting the safety and wellbeing of visitors and students.

NTU has been given Purple Flag accreditation, which is given for the evening and night-time economy (ENTE) which aims to raise the standard and broaden the appeal of town and city centres between the hours or 5pm and 5am.

Nottingham Trent University was recognised for demonstrating best practice with no recommendations made in terms of improvement needed and no areas of concern were highlighted.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor of NTU Professor Eunice Simmons said: “We’re thrilled to be paving the way for our students by providing an environment which has been recognised for its safety, as well as the diverse culture and experiences on offer.

“As a university we work hard to ensure our students have an unforgettable university experience, both in terms of the course they study as well as life outside lectures.

“A lot of work is done behind the scenes to ensure that this happens, and we’re delighted to be recognised for those efforts.”

Since 2007 the programme has awarded Purple Flag status to more than 70 towns and cities in the UK and Ireland.

Purple Flag accredited areas have all reported a consistent increase in footfall and a decrease in crime within the ENTE.

The Purple Flag Universities and colleges programme (PFU&C) was launched in 2017 by the Association of Town and City Management (ATCM) and forms a new part of the Purple Flag accreditation programme.

The aim is to raise the quality and transform the experience of all who study, live and work in universities and colleges across the UK.

Sarah Walker, Purple Flag Programme Manager at the ATCM, said: “This award is not just about safety but also the vibrancy and diversity of the evening and night-time offer.

“This can only be achieved by people working together in a strong partnership to which we have seen a great example of this at Nottingham Trent University.”

Nottingham Trent will be presented with its accreditation certificate and flag at the Purple Flag Awards night taking place in Hull on Wednesday June 27.
