Watch: Nottinghamshire man who suffered stroke at 29 fundraising for life-changing treatment

Video: Dave Shaw on his fundraising efforts for stem cell therapy in the US

A Nottinghamshire man who had to learn to stand again after suffering a stroke is fundraising for life-changing treatment only available in the US.

Aged just 29 in 2014, Dave Shaw suffered a stroke which paralysed the entire left side of his body and damaged his brain.

He has had a number of operations and extensive physiotherapy since but is now fundraising for £7,000 to get stem cell therapy treatment available in Arizona in the US.

Dave, from Tollerton, said: “I was at the local pub playing pool and I started to feel a bit strange so I got in my car and drove home but still didn’t feel right at all.

“I spoke to my Dad and he said to ring the ambulance and it was a bit of a blur after that – I was whisked away and ended up in a coma for a couple of weeks or so.

“It changes your whole life completely as simple things that you take for granted I can’t do anymore, like I can’t do zips, tie shoelaces or cook my food.

“Stem cells are basic cells that grow into any other cell in your body and the theory is it can create new tissue in the brain to create new pathways for nerves to start working again and hopefully get some movement in my left side.

“The success rate is not confirmed but if it does start to work, you can sometimes get 90 per cent back which would be amazing.

“Anything would be amazing really.”
