Renewing the UK’s Trident nuclear weapons system was backed by eight out of 11 Nottinghamshire MPs.

A total of 472 out of 589 MPs that voted were in favour of replacing the four submarines that carry up to eight nuclear Trident missiles each.

The system will cost an estimated £31bn to replace, with supporters saying it helps guarantee the UK’s military security.

But opponents argued it does not represent value for money in an era when terrorist incidents represent a graver threat to life.

Speaking before the result was announced, Newark Conservative MP Robert Jenrick argued in favour of keeping the system.

He said: “Nuclear deterrents have preserved our security and the stability of this country for half a century.

“Security is not about cost, security is the foundation of everything that we hold dear because without security, there is nothing; without security, the costs are incalculable.

“When I was a teenager in what appeared to be an end of the Soviet menace in the 1990s, we planned for a reduction in the size of our nuclear arsenal without abandoning our commitment to an independent deterrent capability.

“That was then a sensible way to hedge against unpredictable future threats to this country’s vital interests; it was the right approach then and it is the right approach again today.”

The only two Notts MPs not to back renewal were Mansfield Labour MP Alan Meale and Nottingham north’s Graham Allen, also Labour. Nottingham south’s Labour representative, Lilian Greenwood, did not vote.
