It’s official – Notts got hotter than Benidorm or Hawaii

Nottinghamshire basked in the sizzling sunshine on the hottest day of the year with temperatures topping 33 degrees Celsius.

Monday’s heatwave – which in Fahrenheit translates to 91.4 – prompted authorities to issue health warnings with the County Council even advising people to stay out of the sun completely between 11am and 3pm.

Forecasters at the Met Office said the remarkable highs meant Notts was hotter than Hawaii – which only made 26 on Monday – and Benidorm, which only got to 28.

Notts people have been sharing hundreds of pictures of how they are keeping cool and how pretty the county has looked today.

But the hot weather has led to concern for the elderly, with Nottinghamshire County Council staff making extra checks on people getting home care.

Barbara Brady, Director of Public Health at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “As temperatures have been mild so far this summer, local residents may be off guard and not take the full precautions to protect their health.

“Vulnerable people such as older people, young children and those with ill health need to take extra precaution but everyone should avoid prolonged periods in the sun, particularly around early afternoon.”

Police and the RSPCA have reminded pet owners not to leave dogs in vehicles after officers had to smash a window to rescue a dog in Bulwell yesterday.

To test just how warm a car can get in the sun, we put a thermometer in a car left on the Forest Rec Park and Ride, along with an egg in a pan to see if the urban myth is true about being able to cook outdoors in intense heat.

While temperatures reached above 45C, the heat was not enough to cook the egg.

Forecasters say the super-high won’t last. Thunderstorms are expected later and Wednesday’s high is only expected to be 27C.

The hottest place in England was Pershore, Worcestershire, which reached 33.4C.
