Notts County head coach Stuart Maynard says midfielder George Abbott ‘can go all the way to the top’ after confirming his load won’t end in January.
It was announced this week that Tottenham loanee Abbott would remain at Meadow Lane until the end of the season, amid reported interest from clubs further up the pyramid.
The magpies midfielder has scored sensational goals against the likes of Peterborough, Cheltenham and Accrington, and Tottenham’s injury crisis has shown little sign of easing – increasing concern her could be recalled to White Hart Lane or move elsewhere.
Magpies head coach Stuart Maynard says he was particularly happy to hear the midfielder will remain on board until the end of the season.
“I think he can go all the way to the top, he’s been so consistent from minute one I feel he’s getting better game-by-game,” he said.
“We’re absolutely delighted that he’s with us, he’s got a bright future and I believe that at some stage he’ll play in Spurs’ first team,” Maynard added.
The head coach joked that “there always is” nervousness that a player like Abbott could be recalled.
“You’re always a little bit [nervous], it’s when he keeps scoring worldies getting towards the January window, we’ve told him that he can continue that now that it’s all sorted,” he joked.
Abbott said he was “really happy” to be staying at the club until the end of the season.
“In my head, I always wanted to stay so I wasn’t really thinking too much about a move – it was always my aim to go the full season with Notts,” he said.
“I didn’t think I was going anywhere and I didn’t think Tottenham were going to recall me, I was pretty set on staying,” Abbott added.
Notts County host Bromley on Saturday (January 25) in League Two, with Abbott expected to start.
The magpies sit fifth in the league with a game in hand on second place Crewe and third place Port Vale as they look to get back into the automatic promotion spots.
