Notts County midfielder Matt Palmer says he felt he would’ve been ‘stupid’ not to re-sign with the club after he extended his contract until the end of the 2026/27 season.
Palmer signed for the Magpies in the summer of 2021 after his contract at Swindon Town expired.
The midfielder then helped the club achieve promotion back to the Football League in the 2022/23 season and was made club captain at the start of this season.
Speaking on Friday (December 13) ahead of the game against Salford, Palmer said he was “really pleased” to extend his contract.
“Me and the club were speaking for quite a while to try and get it sorted, it all sort of fell into place and happened quite quickly,” he said.
“Since I’ve joined I have absolutely loved it, this club and the way they play football is perfect for me to show my best game.
“When I signed here I wanted to take the club from the National League to League Two and just because we have done that doesn’t change anything, I want to get the club from League Two to League One,” he added.
The County captain returned to first team football in September after more than 10 months on the side lines.
Palmer spoke about how difficult it is for players to be out for so long.
“It’s difficult, obviously it was similar for me last season but as a player who’s in that situation you’ve just got to concentrate on yourself and making sure that once you are back fit that you’re in a position to come in and help the team,” he said.
The team visited Queen’s Medical Centre yesterday (December 12) afternoon to spread some Christmas joy and give gifts to children in the hospital.
“I think it’s a really nice thing to do and I think it’s really important to give back to the people who are less fortunate, who are in not as good a position and hopefully we brought a bit of a smile to their faces,” Palmer said.
The Magpies look ahead to their visit to Salford tomorrow (December 14) in a 12.30pm kick off which Palmer is expected to start.
The following week marks the start of the busy festive period, with five games spanning across the two weeks between December 21 and January 4.
