Experts say the average Nottingham household will have splashed more than £700 on Christmas this year.

The Centre for Retail Research says it expects Nottingham households to spend similar amounts to last year – an average of £775 each – with £216 going on food and drink.

And high street retailers hope the festive rush will boost takings after a flatter than expected Black Friday in November.

National footfall on the now-notorious discount day was down compared to the same day in 2014, but online sales rose to around £1.07 billion – a one-day record.

Reanne Paul, marketing executive at Nottingham-based Retail Assist, said: “As a Christmas period it’s been a bumper one for retailers. Most have seen a big increase in trading after Black Friday.

“I think shopping trends are changing with all the deals which are now put on at this time of year. We’ve noticed a massive change in the online and retail shopping scene.

“We’ve seen a lot of people start Christmas shopping online and then come out on to the street to finish their purchases.”
