Nottinghamshire Police have confirmed they have opened criminal investigations into last week’s farm fire in Oxton.

More than a thousand tons of hay caught fire at 11.39pm on Wednesday (October 5) night in a field by the A6097 at Oxton.

The owners of the farm have lost around £100,000 in feed and bedding but are worried those costs will rise due to clear-up costs.

Similar arson attacks have been reported around the area

A spokeswoman for Nottinghamshire Police said that they are “launching a criminal investigation into the incident” and that there are “no viable accident reasons.”

The spokeswoman also confirmed that “similar arson attacks have been reported around the area.”

Andy Guy, a spokesman for National Farmers’ Union, said: “We are worried the fire was started intentionally; it happened late at night and at a remote point so we don’t have any other explanation.

“If it has been intentionally lit, we urge all farmers in the area to take extra caution as episodes like this usually happen in series.

“This farmer took great care and has been doing so for 30 years so it’s hard to believe his methods could have been the issue.”
