NTU student creates cheese puff art

For her most recent art installation, student Hannah Tolmie has created something rather unique, a piece created entirely from edible cheese puffs.

Hannah, a fine art student in her final year at Nottingham Trent University, constructed her art work using over 4,000 cheese puffs.

The art, which depicts a rather cheesy looking sunset, took Hannah six weeks to design and set up, which included placing each individual crisp by hand.

Originally from Marlow, Buckinghamshire, Hannah moved to Nottingham to study fine art three years ago. During her time at university she has created many different art installations, though this one may be her most unique pieces to date.

Named ‘Sun Cream Sundae’, the piece also features a cushioned area with hand-crafted sea-shell cushions, where visitors are encouraged to sit on in order to release the beach style fragrance hidden in the shells.

Hannah wanted the piece to come across as playful and childlike, whilst also representing contamination in the form of cheesy puffs, which are well known for being messy.

In order to preserve the cheese puffs, Hannah had to lightly spray them with a fixative so that the powder would stay on, in order for them to stay the correct colour.

My hands smelt of crisps all the time, because of all the orange powder.

“I’m not sure how much the whole thing cost to be honest, I haven’t actually added it all up yet.”

When asked if she still liked cheese puffs after all the time she spent with them, she said: “I ate loads of them while I was installing it, but yeah, they’re still good.”

Hannah said that the reaction to the piece has been very good, mainly due to the interactivity of the installation.

As for what’s next for Hannah, she wasn’t quite sure, “I’m looking for internships right now, I guess I’m sort of in between places at the moment.”

Hannah’s display can be found in Bonnington at Nottingham Trent University.
