Nursery closed for a week after fire causes ‘considerable’ damage

A Nottingham nursery is closing for at least a week after a fire on Monday night.

Firefighters were called to Mountford House Nursery on Mansfield Road, Carrington, after the blaze broke out at around 8.30pm.

No-one was hurt and the fire was reported under control by 10.05pm, however Notts Fire and Rescue Service said there is considerable smoke and water damage to the building.

Estella Draper, the nursery’s owner, said staff had contacted parents and the cause of the fire is not yet known.

She said: “We have no idea how long the nursery will be closed for but a fire inspection report is currently being completed.

“We have informed all parents that we will be closed for the rest of this week and no children will enter the building until it is safe again.”

Notts Fire and Rescue Service and Notts Police were alerted by the alarm and both attended the incident along with nursery staff.

The fire is thought to have begun on the ground floor.

The nursery caters for children aged six weeks to five years.

All electrics have been turned off in the building while an inspection is carried out, including the nursery’s main phone line, meaning it could not take calls on Tuesday morning.

Ms Draper said: “We contacted all parents by mobile phone this morning and they have been extremely understanding, very sympathetic and supportive.

“We hope to have a better idea of the damage by later today and will inform people about what’s happening as soon as we know.”
