Traffic cameras close to junction 23 show the queue on the northbound side.

The M1 northbound was closed on Friday morning at junction 23 after a man died after being hit by a lorry.

Traffic was redirected back onto the northbound carriageway through the exit and entry slip roads after emergency services were called to the scene at 5.20am this morning.

A man, who was believed to be on the carriageway, was pronounced dead at the scene after being hit by the vehicle.

The road was eventually re-opened around lunchtime but long queues continued into the early afternoon.

Congestion finally began to ease just before 3pm.

The incident followed a report made just minutes earlier of a collision on the bridge over the M1 junction involving one vehicle.

It resulted in the A512 being closed with police officers working to established what caused both incidents and if there is any link between them.

A statement from Leicestershire Police said: “The exact circumstances surrounding the collision and the events leading up to it are under investigation.”

Any witnesses of either collision are asked to contact 101, quoting incident 84 of 9 September.
